TIPS FOR A HEALTHY SPINE

Some of the best ways to keep our back healthy are actually quite simple, but the challenge is to start habits early and stay consistent. Once damage occurs, then the focus is on maintaining and preventing further damage. Here are a few tips on how to help keep a healthy spine & ease back pine:
1. One of the first priorities should be our posture. Do we stand up straight? Are we sitting properly? What is the position of our neck and back as we perform our daily tasks? These are issues that will have a huge influence on the current and future health of our spine. Posture analysis and an ergonomic assessment can be extremely helpful to determine what can be done to help the individual.
2. Movement and exercise. Do you realize that the spine has over 140 different joints between all the bones? And like any joint in the body, it needs to move regularly in its normal plane of motion. That is very important to keep the joints healthy.
3. Avoid prolonged sitting. There is a saying that “sitting is the new smoking”. This is reference to all the ailment that can come with too much sitting. Sitting tends to flex the low back which will load the discs in an adverse way as well as putting additional stress on the supportive muscles. Consider a sit to stand work station so that you can change positions often while completing your tasks.
4. Regular visits to your chiropractor. Your chiropractor is an expert in the proper alignment and movement of the spine. He can help identify areas of weakness and dysfunction and provide simple treatments and recommendations for exercises and stretches that are appropriate for the individual.
